More than one year ago, our Maximize Life campaign united us in a worldwide pledge to collect signatures in support of the World Cancer Declaration. “You should pledge as many signatures as possible” we were told at the World Cancer Congress 2010, with the cancer community’s aim set at the United Nations High Level Summit to take place on September 19 and 20, 2011. The Summit seemed far away at that time, but nothing like a challenge to help us step up our efforts.
Our audacious pledge of more than 10,000 signatures turned into 27,000! These signatures have been added to thousands of others collected around the world and consolidated by the Union for International Cancer Control, UICC, and will be given to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon at the Summit.
After many events, local campaigns, signature sheets, and with the individual efforts of so many, here we are today in the dawn of the day we have been waiting for. My colleague Erin and myself will be on site in New York, excited to be part of the historical event. Fresh in our minds will be every single signature that came into our website: the endless trickledown of support from visitors to our office in India, the energy and excitement from university students in Mexico, the viral campaign that rendered so many thousands of signatures from the Philippines, the commitment of young middle school students at Madrona School in our hometown of Edmonds, friends and colleagues in Venezuela, Kenya, Russia and beyond. A total of 99 countries strong, we are proud to bring to the leaders of every country in the United Nations, the individual voice of each of our friends. “We care deeply about cancer control because our lives and the lives of our loved ones depend on it”.
The fight will surely not be over on September 20, in fact, this is just the beginning. But that day will represent the closing of an important chapter that united us and showed us that together we can achieve just about anything.
Fresh in our hearts will be the support of each one of you. We will do our best to honor you, and as long as we do our best, we will never fail.
