Celebration is a kind of nourishment we all need in our lives, and each individual brings a special recipe or offering, so that together we will make a great feast.
International CML Day was launched on 22nd September 2011 to salute the fighting spirit of CMLers and celebrate life. The day has been specially picked to symbolize the genetic inter-change of chromosomes 9 and 22 which consequently causes Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Declaring 22nd September as International CML day helps bring people diagnosed with CML together to share their stories and learn from one another’s’ experiences. It gives an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of timely access to treatment and care for people living with CML.
In the second year of launch, Friends of Max (FOM) has planned an elaborate all-day event in association with the prestigious Tata Memorial Hospital at its ACTREC centre in Kharghar on the outskirts of Mumbai. This event will bring eminent physicians from the hospital face to face with CMLers and their care givers. The emphasis this year will be to create awareness about the importance of monitoring one’s CML by testing for PCR levels. This will be done by launching The MAX Foundation’s 'What is My PCR' campaign on this day.
All CMLers residing in Mumbai have been contacted and more than 250 of them have confirmed their attendance. The program will open with a formal address by Dr Hari Menon, eminent Oncologist and Associate Professor from the Tata Memorial Hospital. This will be followed by an address by Viji Venkatesh, India Country Head for The MAX Foundation. The famous Bhai and Bhidu show by CMLers Pramod John and Nirmesh Prakash will be staged, the emphasis being on understanding PCR and its role in assessing the effectiveness of treatment. The ever important issue of compliance to treatment will also be addressed by Bhai and Bhidu in their inimically humorous and effective way.
This will be followed by a Panel Discussion on Compliance and Monitoring and the role this plays in the continued well-being of the CML survivors. The Panel will have oncologists, survivors and caregivers sharing their knowledge and information with the audience. question-answer session between CMLers, a panel of Oncologists and cancer survivors. All doubts about CML, its treatment and management will be cleared during this session.
After lunch, a celebratory cricket match will be played between two teams - the FOM volunteers and TMH physicians. The match has been aptly christened CATCH 22/9 CRICKET MATCH. The participating players and other dignitaries will be given mementoes fitting the occasion. Stalls will be set up at the venue to educate CMLers about the 'What is My PCR' campaign and about FOM.
All in all September 22, 2012 will be a day well spent celebrating the will to live against all odds.
