Mariana Rubi Gonzalez, our MaxStation based in Mexico City is our Guest Blogger for today. She was one of the stars of the winning team who joined with AMELEG to raise awareness and collect signatures at the Toluca Stadium as part of the campaign.
What is the most important activity of a Mexican citizen on a Sunday? Yes, it is football (soccer). Even babies attend the stadium every Sunday to cheer their team. My favorite team it is called the PUMAS (meaning panther); and I have great debates with some AMELEG volunteers whose favorite team is the America Eagles.
The team in Toluca is the RED DEVILS and this Sunday they played the BLUE CROISSE from Mexico City. But our team never actually watched the game because we were making another game outside of the stadium. AMELEG cancer survivors living in Toluca said, “We can get lots of signatures in the stadium, everybody will be there”. So we went to the street next to the stadium; and like all the people who sell t-shirts and team flags, we placed our “Maximize Life” banner…
Ours was a great team; we had our Beckham, our Cristiano, our Chicharito… We were a great team who spread all around the “field” so every centimeter was covered. In less than two hours, our team collected more than 200 signatures and tributes!!! It was the middle of our game, and the team was tired; but our little Beckham scored once and again! He got signatures from every person he met.
We decided not to ask only the obvious people, everyone who was going to watch the game; but also all those who were working there: all kind of policemen and also the man who sells souvenirs, like team flags and t-shirts and others selling jello and “raspado” (flavored ice).
At the minute 90 our game was over; and we took the wining team’s picture: The joint team of AMELEG and The Max Foundation won!! Now that we won, we will face another team in the next game!!!
