In honor of World Cancer Day on February 4th, we are so excited to share this year’s Maximize Life video, dedicated to everyone who joined the 2010 Global Cancer Awareness Campaign by adding their names to the World Cancer Declaration and participating in local cancer awareness events. In partnership with 30 patient associations around the world, over 12,000 signatures were collected at 60 community events. Together, we are making our voices heard!
On World Cancer Day, all of us who signed the World Cancer Declaration will be represented by a delegation going to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in Geneva to personally handover the 12,000 signatures collected during the 2010 Global Cancer Awareness Campaign. Our Executive Director, Pat will stand together with cancer survivors and caregivers from Mexico, Venezuela, the Philippines and India to present the signatures. What follows is Pat’s address to the participants at the World Cancer Day event on February 5th.
“It is my honor to be here today in the company of four courageous individuals; cancer survivors and caregivers from India, Mexico, the Philippines and Venezuela. We are representing the voices of the unheard, those who do not have a global platform or microphone, yet those who care as much or more about cancer control because their lives and the lives of their loved ones depend on having access to treatment and support.
On August 20th at the World Cancer Congress in Shenzhen, China, The Max Foundation pledged to collect more than 10,000 signatures to the World Cancer Declaration. We pledged with confidence at the highest level because we knew that behind us stands an army of thousands of the most dedicated and caring people around the world.
For the past 12 years, The Max Foundation has been privileged to be a part of the journey of cancer survivors in remote locations around the world. We have witnessed firsthand the fear and despair of a cancer diagnosis regardless of culture or socio-economic background; and we have also witnessed the transformation in people who were given an opportunity to stand up to the disease. When given this opportunity, cancer survivors and their loved ones, rise to the challenge to live with passion and courage, and choose to dedicate the rest of their lives to their communities.
The Maximize Life Movement is a platform that seeks to capture this life-changing phenomenon observed all over the world every time a survivor finds a path for access to treatment and support. Maximize Life is inspired by survivors and supporters alike who live with cancer. We are honored to call them our friends, we are humbled by their love, and we are in awe of their courage.
On behalf of the Maximize Life Movement, it is my pleasure to handover more than 12,000 signatures to the World Cancer Declaration representing 86 countries.”
