During the three-day New Horizons in Treating Cancer meeting, it is inspirational to see everyone from different backgrounds, speaking different first languages, but all, with one voice and goal: advocating and working together for the best possible treatments for CML and GIST communities! All of the patient advocates are charged with gathering information to take home to survivors, leaders and constituents within their local communities. The networking opportunity and exchange of ideas, best practices and knowledge is something that benefits those attending the meeting and beyond.
This year, the congress included presentations on the latest clinical updates for CML and GIST treatments, as well as current data from studies around the world. Knowledge is powerful – yes, it is! Top key opinion leader physicians shared their expertise during the weekend.
Besides treatment updates, best practices from each region were also presented by patient advocates. This exchange of information is done through a “marketplace” platform, which allows participants to “pick and choose” the most relevant topic to attend and enables further discussion with presenter. This concept was successful as it allowed interactive discussion between the small group participants.
Besides having the chance to share and learn at the meeting; what really made me excited was the chance to meet “heroes” in person – the patient advocates who have been working so hard from their own countries every day of the year. In many cases, I have only heard their names but last weekend, my dream of meeting them in person came true!
Thanks to all who made for a great meeting, which will have lasting effects throughout the year.
