Reflecting on an Amazing Year
It’s been a very full year at The Max Foundation, and it’s not over yet! As we approach the end of 2016 and prepare to welcome 2017, we are reflecting on some of the remarkable moments from 2016 that would not be possible without the support of our donors and partners, and the dedication of our global team.
Memories of 2016
Early in 2016, we launched our Five-Year Strategic Plan and a brand-new website. We look forward to leaping forward into the future as we strengthen our capacity to meet the needs of cancer patients, doctors, families, and communities around the globe – with your help, we will ensure that all people living with cancer have access to the best treatment and support.
Calling all patients
In Chile, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, we have guided 736 patients through their cancer with our Day by Day program, which provides regular support for patients through phone calls, informational material, and patient support meetings. Day by Day is helping hundreds of enrolled patients manage their disease and live vibrant and healthy lives thanks to your help!
Let’s come together
In partnership with Max Family in Malaysia, we experimented with a new format for patient workshops and instituted more intimate and casual gathering called Let’s Sama-Sama (Let’s Come Together). Let’s Sama-Sama brought our patient initiatives back to the root sharing and learning in community and encouraged active participation from patients!
Making roots in Africa
This year, we registered as an official entity within South Africa. As a local entity, we are able to reach an optimal outcome for patients within the region. Cathy Scheepers, our regional Program Officer, put it best: “Like an ever-expanding tree, Max has slowly been pushing its branches across Africa to provide shade and comfort to those in need. As from July 2016, we are no longer just offering a branch, we are officially setting down roots in the African soil.”
Raising a cup of chai across the USA
For the second year in a row, friends across the US and in Canada hosted addas (tea parties) to raise funds to support people facing cancer in India through Chai for Cancer USA. In 2016, Chai for Cancer USA traveled across the country to 12 addas in 12 cities, raising $23,631.61 to provide critical access to diagnostic testing for our patients!
Fighting the good fight
This was a difficult year for our India team, as they battled against executive ruling that left hundreds without access to the medication they rely on to live. Viji Venkatesh, our South Asia Region Head, and her team worked tirelessly on keeping access to treatment open and available. The battle is not over, but I am blown away by the deep commitment of our team.
We look forward to having your support as part of our journey, and our patients’ journey, in the coming year – see how you are helping patients to find dignity and hope in the face of cancer by following the patient journey.
P.S. Your year-end gift provides vital support for patients around the world – will you donate today?
