Barriers to Access

Finding effective, affordable cancer treatment is a long and often difficult journey for patients living in low- and middle-income countries. They may not be able to access diagnostics, medication, and support – some can’t even afford bus fare to make it to the nearest clinic.

Systemic Barriers

Social / Cultural Barriers

  • 80%

of patients are diagnosed with breast cancer at the metastatic stage

Patients often have limited access to disease education, which makes it harder to know when, where, and how to get treatment

“When medication becomes available, understanding must follow. When systems are strengthened, communities must feel equipped to participate in them.”

Financial Barriers

  • $1.2T

in annual economic costs related to cancer

Patients can’t afford the hospital consult, diagnostic tests, medication, or the cost of traveling to the clinic and missing work

“Today, my son has excellent health, and our family is happy and whole because we can reach the hospital. For me, your transportation support is not just a bus ride, it is the greatest support that keeps my son alive.”

Structural / Systemic Barriers

  • 5

Fewer than 5 mammography units per 1 million residents in parts of Africa and Asia

Diagnostic capabilities, like education and equipment, may not be available in the country

“Access to adequate diagnosis and treatment is paramount to change the survival and the quality of life of patients with advanced breast cancer. Together, we can make a bigger difference than isolated in improving the lives of patients and their families.”
